The Chair Project by uglybug The Chair Project by uglybug
I've been missing my conceptual work so much lately. A year or so ago, when I was doing my 365 project, I'd push myself to create conceptual art whenever I had the time. I am now ready to launch back into that genre and I've been sketching ideas of concepts over the past few weeks. A clear pattern has been forming. So, everyone, here is the beginning of The Chair Project!

beautiful work. it reminds me Kundera's play 'Jacques and His Master', but there's no children :)

"Master: I think I’ll make him a watchmaker. Or a carpenter. Yes, better a carpenter. He will make multitudes of chairs and multitudes of children and the children will make new chairs and the new children who will beget new multitudes of children and chairs…

Jacques: And the world will be cluttered with chairs, and that will be your revenge.

Master (with disgust): The grass will cease to grow, the flower to bloom, and everywhere there will be only children and chairs.

Jacques: Children and chairs, chairs and children. It’s a grim picture you paint of the future. How lucky we are, sir! We’ll die in time.

Master (pensively): I certainly hope so, Jacques, because there are times when I feel great anxiety at the thought of the continual repetition of children and chairs and all that …"

It makes me think of the many places you sit and contemplate throughout life... let me explain that.
As you progress through a situation, or through the years, each time you pause to reconstruct yourself, or to evaluate where you are at, you often find that you are looking at things from a slightly different angle -the same scene from a new perspective, as it were. In this case a different chair...
And each time you pause to contemplate, you usually linger until you have found some new sort of peace with yourself... the way one would undoubtedly find peace from sitting in a clearing like this for long enough ... and from there you wander onwards -just as the chairs seem to do.
I'm not sure what you meant by this piece, but this is how I connected with it.
Hope this was... um constructive enough feedback :)

Thank you - that is a really lovely interpretation of it! I love hearing what other people deduce from my work :]
The initial idea was to photograph chairs in ways they wouldn't normally be seen for a series of images. Instead of trying to point my images towards a particular idea, I like to leave their meaning open to interpretation - to create art that makes people think. This is the starting point :]

Anyway, thank you again for your wonderful feedback!
